This crispy chilli tofu is honestly just like take-out crispy chilli beef, minus the beef of course. It’s so tasty, surprisingly simple to make and is the perfect fake-away dish to impress your dinner guests!
I actually made this sauce myself after a trip to my local Asian supermarket to pick up some ingredients, but you could easily use a store bought sweet chilli sauce.
I love making Asian food, so if you do get a chance to pop into an Asian supermarket, here’s some ingredients I always like to stock up on that go amazingly in this dish! Red pepper chilli paste, Szechuan peppercorns, Soybean curd, Shaoxing rice wine & sesame oil. You can add a lot of these ingredients to most Asian dishes and it will intensify your flavours.

INGREDIENTS
- Firm tofu
- Cornflour
- All purpose flour
- Dairy-free milk
- Onion
- Red pepper
CHILLI SAUCE
- 1 tbsp Red pepper chilli paste
- 1/2 tbsp beancurd
- Splash of Shaoxing wine
- 1 tbsp of toasted Szechuan peppercorns, crushed
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 garlic cloves
- Red Chilli (to taste)
- Juice of 1/2 lemon
- Cornstarch (to make it thick & saucy)
HOW TO MAKE IT
- Start by making your crispy tofu – in a bowl mix 1/2 cornflour & 1/2 all purpose flour along with enough dairy-free milk to make a thick batter
- Cut your tofu into your desired strips and coat into the batter – for extra crisp, dip the battered tofu into more flour then back into the batter mix
- Deep fry the battered tofu for a few minutes until it starts to brown then remove and place to one side
- Make your sauce by combining all of the ingredients except from the cornstarch
- In your wok, fry your onion & pepper for a couple of minutes along with any other veg you fancy with it
- Add the sauce to the pan and pour in your cornstarch allowing it to bubble for a couple of minutes into a thick sauce
- Add your crispy tofu to the sauce and cook through for a further minute adding a splash of soy sauce and a seasoning of salt & pepper
- Top with extra chilli flakes for a kick along with sesame oil & sesame seeds
